Although the three test papers are at different levels of difficulty overall, they all share some questions so that pupils get a taste of other levels. There are nine questions in all.  Any pupils may be entered for any level regardless of age, but we give indicative age-levels in terms of National-Curriculum years.

The foundation level (questions 1-5) is aimed at Years 7-8, and is marked by teachers in schools using a detailed marking scheme provided by us. Students often work at this level in teams. It is up to individual schools how long to allow pupils to do this paper but we suggest approximately two hours. UKLO provides a template for participation certificates which schools may personalise and print.

The intermediate level (questions 3-7) is aimed at Years 9-11, and again is marked by teachers in schools, using a detailed marking scheme provided by us. Students may work at this level in teams. It is up to individual schools how long to allow pupils to do this paper but we suggest approximately two hours. UKLO provides a template for participation certificates which schools may personalise and print.

The advanced level (questions 5-9) is the paper that allows students to be considered for round 2 and the international competition. This paper will be marked by the UKLO team and UKLO will print and distribute not only certificates of participation, but also Gold, Silver and Bronze award certificates. This paper is scheduled to take two and a half hours, and pupils must take it individually to be considered for round 2.
