Round 1 2015

Test material for Round 1 in 2015

==============================================================

If you want your pupils to take part in this competition, you will need to download:

  • the problems that you want them to do
  • a spreadsheet for their names and results.

For the three lower levels, the rest is up to you, including downloading and printing certificate templates. But if you want pupils to take part in the Advanced competition, then

  • you must have already notified us of your expected numbers
  • you should have been sent the contact details for your marker; if you haven’t, please contact Jessica Brown immediately.

Watch this space for last-minute corrections, warnings, confessions and general disaster management.

  • Problem 5 (Runes) Tues 4 Feb.
    • Item n. Sif: the second and third rune should be reversed
    • Scoring: Q.5.3. 2 points for each correct word; 1 for one wrong letter.
    • The downloadable file for Problem 5 has been revised as of 9:11 am Tuesday.
  • Problem 4 (Old English) Tues 24 Feb.
    • The total points should be 21, not 18.
    • This doesn’t change the scoring system, and you can enter points up to 21.
    • But it means that marks are slightly inflated (divided by 18 instead of by 21), so if you care, you can download a revised spreadsheet which calculates marks correctly.
    • The problem-and-solution file for this problem listed below is now correct.

Problems

  • There are ten problems of increasing difficulty and partly shared by the different levels:
    • Breakthrough: Problems 1-3 (3 problems)
    • Foundation: Problems 2-5 (4 problems)
    • Intermediate: Problems 4-7 (4 problems)
    • Advanced: Problems 6-10 (5 problems)
  • They are available for download as follows:

Spreadsheet

You should download a general-purpose spreadsheet in order to:
1. record Advanced candidate names and other details of candidates and schools, which you’ll then pass to your marker.
2. record both school/candidate details and point scores for non-Advanced candidates, which you’ll then use in your own marking and eventually share with Laura Tomlinson at UKLO.

  • You can open the spreadsheet in any spreadsheet editor (e.g. MS Excel), and if you want to, you can make copies of the worksheet (the individual page within the spreadsheet) for recording different levels (e.g. one sheet for Intermediate, one for Foundation). But if you prefer you can combine all your data in a single sheet because you enter scores for different problems separately.
  • When you enter data, always enter it in a white space, because the grey spaces are filled automatically. In fact, we hope that we’ve been able to lock the grey spaces so you can’t change them.
  • The ten white columns on the right are for the ten problems, so ‘P1 /26’ for ‘ points, out of 26, for Problem 1’ and so on. As you enter points in these columns, they will be converted automatically into marks in the grey columns on the right.
  • The file is currently called ‘your-postcode.xlsx’, but when you send it to us, please replace ‘your-postcode’ by your school’s postcode (which you’ll also add in the spreadsheet).

Certificates NB added 7 Feb 2015

You can download editable templates for the following certificates (which you can print and distribute as you see fit):
