Support
Support for teachers
Here are some materials to support teachers:
- UKLO pin-badges to use (for example) as local prizes
- recruitment posters
- a recruitment video (USA)
- sample test material
- some training shows (ppt) for pupils
- a ppt presentation to teachers (by Louis Blois, June 2013 at the Univ of Huddersfield) about the how, why and what of the Olympiad
- a discussion of linguistics clubs for pupils
- a small collection of starter-activities using UKLO-style material
- Babel (a school magazine about language) and its kid sister, Lingo (for primary schools).
- the support website for the North American Computational Linguistics Olympiad (but remember that the UK olympiad is pure linguistics, with very little about computing; our main aim is to promote interest in language structure, with logical thinking as a by-product)
- some training courses for teachers:
- The University of Marburg’s Virtual Linguistics Campus (follow: ‘Lecture Hall’ > ‘English Linguistics (for teachers)’)
- NB this now includes a ‘MOOC‘ (Massive Open Online Course) on linguistics – free!
- The University of Marburg’s Virtual Linguistics Campus (follow: ‘Lecture Hall’ > ‘English Linguistics (for teachers)’)
We are keen to start a linguistics club next term in school and would like to receive some material to promote the event and also activities to do in class. I have taught it in other schools but it will be my first time in that school and I left all my material in the other school.
