Round 1

Dates for 2016

  • Jan 25: deadline for notifying Advanced numbers
  • Jan 28: test material released on the portal for all levels at round 1
  • Feb 1-5: test week for round 1
  • Feb 5 (end): deadline for scanning and uploading Advanced scripts and for posting them to your marker.
  • Feb 6: solutions for non-Advanced problems released via the portal.
  • Feb 22: results announced for the Advanced test.
  • March 11: deadline for entering non-Advanced results in the portal.
  • March 18-20: Round 2
  • April 1: All-clear for publishing all the test material, solutions and marking schemes via the website and within schools.

Test material and certificate blanks: all the material you need for the test (apart from coloured pens – highly recommended!), including certificate templates, will be available for download at 5.00 pm on Thursday 28 January.

Date:   February 1-5, 2016. You can arrange your competition at any time during this week, but you must make sure you have time:

  • to scan the Advanced scripts in time to send them to us on the evening of Friday Feb 5.
  • to print the test papers (at all levels) which will be available from the evening of Thursday Jan 28.
  • Sending us your results for the Foundation and Intermediate tests that you marked: by 18 March.

You’re welcome to make whatever arrangements you like for the competition, including:

  • allowing pupils to work in small teams.
  • splitting a paper into separate problems to be tackled at different times, e.g. in timetabled classes.
  • making up your own ad hoc paper by combining problems to taste, or even by just selecting one or two problems. (Our results-reporting system will allow you to enter results for individual problems, so it won’t worry if they don’t fit a standard paper.)

Advanced entries: If you’re expecting to enter candidates for the Advanced competition,

  • please notify us of your numbers (not names) as instructed, so that we can assign you a marker. This form will remain open till 22 January, but no longer. Late entries will not be accepted.
  • please arrange for your candidates to take the test under the conditions that you would provide for any public exam such as GCSE – i.e. a quiet room with an invigilator and no communication between candidates (or access to mobile phones!).
  • please allow 2.5 hours for the test.

Further details. For further information about the arrangements for Round 1, see archived email messages.

Results of the Advanced competition:

  • These were announced on February 22nd.
  • National statistics for Round 1
  • Maximum points and marks for Round 1 problems, plus the formula for converting actual points to marks:
problem max points max marks formula
#1 29 5 m=(p/29)x5
#2 22 5 m=(p/22)x5
#3 14 10 m=(p/14)x5
#4 18 10 m=(p/22)x10
#5 26 15 m=(p/26)x15
#6 10 15 m=(p/10)x15
#7 20 20 m=p
#8 15 20 m=(p/15)x5
#9 23 25 m=(p/23)x25
#10 35 25 m=(p/35)x25

  • National thresholds for Gold, Silver and Bronze certificates at all levels (e.g. at Advanced level any score of 74.7 or higher, but below 83.3, earns a Bronze); these thresholds are based on the total marks for each candidate calculated as a percentage of the maximum marks for the level concerned, so that the top 5% get Gold, the next 10% Silver and the next 20% Bronze.
  total entries gold silver bronze
Breakthrough 244  76.8  62.3  50.1
Foundation 506  86.2  79.6  72
Intermediate 774 87.1  79  71.5
